Hi,

I'm Tom and I want to be your ICSMSU President:

ICSM has been a huge part of my life for all of my 5 years here and I can honestly say it has been the biggest influence on who I am today. This year as ICSMSU Clubs and Societies Chair I have gained a unique insight into the inner workings of our Clubs and Societies, Imperial College Union and the Faculty of Medicine. I am experienced, passionate and approachable and my invaluable experience means I will hit the ground running if elected as your ICSMSU President.

Managing Teams

In my 5 years studying at ICSM, I have got a tremendous amount of experience of how the different stages of the Medicine and BMB courses work, from early years and BSc year to 5th year clinical placements.

This has given me a good overview of the structure of the courses, and will mean I will be on a good footing to work with Faculty to improve the educational experience of our students

I have also gained personal experience with the resit structure and welfare support network at Imperial. I would use this hard won knowledge to support all ICSM students as President, whatever their stage in the course(s) or issues may be.

I have a great deal of experience in a wide range of Clubs and Societies, being an active member of 4 societies (ICSM Drama, Light Opera, Musicsoc and Rugby) throughout my years at ICSM.

My experience producing and directing shows for Light Opera and Drama has given me valuable financial and organisational experience and I am always eager to support others and volunteer my time freely to help other members of all of the societies I am involved in.

I would take this attitude into my work as ICSM President, constantly working to make myself available to support all ICSM students

My roles on ICSMSU as Social Secretary in my 2nd year and Clubs and Societies Chair this year have given me a unique insight into how our Clubs and Societies, ICSMSU and Imperial College Union function.

As Clubs and Societies Chair I have fought for our Clubs' interests with multiple groups including ICU and Sport Imperial and have secured a record amount of funding for our Clubs and Societies this year. I would use this experience to allow me to best support our ICSMSU officers next year and I would lever my good working relationships with leaders in ICU and Sport Imperial to get the best for our students

As the leader of subcommittees of Light Opera and ICSMSU, I have learnt valuable experience managing teams and supporting other committee members and ICSMSU officers.

My time as Clubs and Societies Chair has given me invaluable experience with supporting the needs of the large group of ICSMSU Club Captains, Chairs and Presidents and speaking up for their views to Imperial College Union, Sport Imperial and other bodies including the ICSMSU Alumni Association, St Mary's Hospital Association and Clubs, Societies and Projects Board (CSPB).

My ABC Plan for ICSM

My Plans

Academic and Welfare support for all ICSM students

For a large majority of our students, the Academic and Welfare support provided by ICSMSU is the most important way they interact with our Union.

Working closely with the ICSMSU Welfare Team, I would continue the amazing work achieved this year to support all years of ICSM, through our Welfare campaigns and by lobbying the college and faculty to provide equitable provision of Senior Tutor sessions and counselling services in Charing Cross Campus, nearer the majority of our students.

Alongside the Academic Team, I would also work with faculty to support the mock exams our ICSM Clubs and Societies provide our students with a Mock mark scheme and would continue to guarantee a full length, free mock exam for all students sitting practical exams.

As President, my contacts within the Faculty of Medicine will allow me to work closely in collaboration with them at SSLGs and other meetings to improve academic and welfare support for all students on both the Medicine and BMB courses.

Academics and Welfare

Building a stronger ICSM Community

ICSM has a unique identity that provides incredible moments for students. I believe our Clubs and Societies have a big role to play in bringing new students into our community and I would use the experience I have gained this year to work alongside our ICSM Club Captains, Chairs and Presidents to create a welcoming environment for all our freshers.

This year ICSMSU has had multiple clashes with Imperial College Union (ICU) around events in the Reynolds Bar. The Medical school bar is important for our identity as ICSM, particularly to our Clubs and Societies which use the space for sports night and for post-rehearsal socials. Working closely this year with ICU as Clubs and Societies Chair, I have gained an insight into the environment have made valuable contacts, which I would use as President to lobby ICU and College to improve the provision of food and drinks (including hot drinks) at the cafe and bar at Charing Cross Campus.

Changing and updating ICSMSU

The makeup of ICSM is changing quickly, with changes to the entry requirements and cultural factors leading to an increasing number of students joining our community who are non-drinkers and more focussed on Academics than previously. This brings with it a slew of challenges as we try to maintain our traditions and identity while providing our students what they want.

As well as changing demographics, we also have major ongoing changes to the course in preparation for the launch of the UKMLA. As President, I will continue to lobby the GMC to provide a prompt full curriculum for the UKMLA and to give adequate guidance to the medical school to ensure that no ICSM student sits a summative exam they were not properly prepared for.

As your President, I would use the results of the ICSMSU strategic review to update the services and support ICSMSU provide to our students, starting with a focus on refreshing and updating Freshers' Fortnight in time for the new cohort and eventually looking at everything we offer to our students Academically, Extracurricularly and through the Welfare team, listening to your feedback and updating ICSMSU do to meet the evolving needs of our members while keeping the most important parts of our individuality and identity intact.
